Quick answer
Ocean transit from China to most African, Middle Eastern and Latin American ports takes roughly 18–40 days depending on the route, plus 3–7 days of booking and loading, and 3–14 days of customs clearance at destination. A typical first order therefore lands 5–9 weeks after deposit, plan stock and cash flow around that window rather than around the factory’s production time alone.
Why shipping time expectations go wrong
Most importers plan only the ocean leg. In practice the timeline has five segments, and any one of them can slip: booking and space allocation, factory loading, ocean transit, port and customs clearance, and inland delivery. Understanding each segment lets you set a realistic date with your customers and your bank.
The five segments in detail
1. Booking and space allocation (3–10 days)
Container space is booked after the proforma is confirmed. Peak season (before Chinese New Year and in Q3–Q4) tightens space and can add a week. Booking early is free; booking late costs money.
2. Production and loading (per proforma)
Production time is confirmed on the proforma invoice. Loading itself is 1–2 days once the vehicle is finished and inspected, and loading photos are shared before the balance payment.
3. Ocean transit (18–40 days)
Route drives transit time: China–West Africa is typically the longest, China–East Africa and China–Middle East sit in the middle, and China–Southeast Asia is the shortest. Direct sailings beat transshipment routes on both time and damage risk.
4. Port and customs clearance (3–14 days)
Clearance speed depends on your documents and your agent. Pre-shipment conformity (SONCAP, PVoC, SABER and similar) must be arranged before the vessel arrives, otherwise the container waits, and demurrage charges start.
5. Inland delivery (1–10 days)
Port to warehouse time varies from a few hours in compact port cities to over a week for landlocked destinations such as Uganda, Rwanda or Ethiopia, where cargo moves by truck from Mombasa or Djibouti.
What you can control
- Documents first. Start conformity certification and your customs registration before production ends. This this the most common cause of avoidable delay.
- Book space early. Confirm the booking as soon as the proforma is signed.
- Choose direct sailings where possible. Fewer handlings means less damage risk and a shorter, more predictable transit.
- Clear demurrage terms. Ask your agent for the free-days window at your port and plan pickup inside it.
Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping from China to Africa take?
Typically 25–40 days of ocean transit to West Africa, 20–30 days to East Africa, plus booking, clearance and inland delivery. Total door-to-door is commonly 5–9 weeks.
What is the fastest route for a tricycle container?
Southeast Asia is the shortest (often under three weeks); Middle East routes typically run 18–25 days. Direct sailings are faster and safer than transshipment.
Why is my container waiting at the port?
The most common reasons are missing pre-shipment conformity certificates, incomplete customs documentation, or duty payment not settled. Confirm every document before the vessel arrives.
Do you provide shipping to my port?
We quote FOB or CFR to your destination port with a confirmed loading plan. Send the port and quantities in the quote request and we reply within one business day.
