CBU, SKD or CKD? Which Import Format Saves You the Most Money

Import format is the single biggest cost lever when importing tricycles. This guide compares CBU, SKD and CKD packing so you can choose based…

If you are importing three-wheelers from China, how your vehicles are packed matters as much as which model you choose. The three standard export formats, CBU, SKD and CKD, directly control your freight cost per unit, import duty rate and assembly workload.

CBU: fully assembled, fastest to sell

CBU (Completely Built-Up) units arrive ready to ride. There is no local assembly, which makes CBU the right choice for sample orders of 1–5 units, urgent government tenders or showroom display models. The trade-off is freight: a 40ft container typically holds only around 8–12 assembled cargo tricycles, so the shipping cost per unit is highest in this format.

SKD: the balance most distributors choose

With SKD (Semi-Knocked-Down), the factory pre-assembles the chassis, engine and drivetrain, then packs wheels, cargo box, seats and canopy separately. Because disassembly is minimal, a 40ft container can hold roughly 25–35 units, often more than double a CBU load. Final assembly takes a local mechanic only a few hours with basic hand tools, no welding required. For most B2B buyers in Africa and Latin America, SKD delivers the best mix of low landed cost and simple setup.

CKD: maximum savings for serious volume

CKD (Completely Knocked-Down) ships the vehicle as individual components. Container utilization can reach 40+ units per 40ft high-cube, cutting per-unit freight dramatically. More importantly, many countries tax vehicle parts at a lower rate than fully built vehicles, Kenya, Nigeria and Ethiopia all offer meaningful CKD duty advantages under their national automotive policies. The requirement: you need an assembly line, trained staff and quality control. CKD suits established importers planning local production, not first-time buyers.

Quick decision guide

  • Ordering fewer than 10 units → CBU
  • Ordering a full container without workshop facilities → SKD
  • Building a local assembly business at scale → CKD

Run the arithmetic on landed cost, not FOB price

The format that saves money is the one with the lowest total landed cost, and that number is built from four parts: the factory price for that format, the freight per unit, the duty and taxes at the destination, and the local cost of finishing or assembling the vehicle.

CBU usually wins on the first two lines and loses on duty. CKD wins on duty and loses on freight per unit and local workload. Which one comes out ahead depends on your market’s tariff and your own capacity, so the honest answer is that it changes by country.

A worked comparison, in principle

  • CBU: lowest factory and freight cost per unit, highest duty, no local work.
  • SKD: mid-range factory price, higher freight per unit because of packaging, lower duty, some local work.
  • CKD: lowest duty, highest freight per unit and the most local work.

Three questions that settle it

  1. What is the duty rate on a complete vehicle in your market?
  2. Can you finish or assemble locally to a standard you would sell or use?
  3. What is the volume? Assembly only pays at steady volumes, because the fixed cost has to be spread.

Where buyers go wrong

The classic mistake is choosing CKD for a small first order because the duty rate looks attractive, then discovering that the local assembly cost per unit is higher than the duty saved. A small trial is usually better done in CBU while the local capability is built.
